Dear Website Visitor:
An epidemic of drug addiction is sweeping this nation. This drug is called methamphetamine, and extremely potent form of "speed" that is ravaging our youth and young adults. Methamphetamine has a 98% addiction rate. 98% of people who try meth once get addicted to it within one year. 75% of them within one week.
It is destroying families and destroying lives. Addicts neglect, abuse and abandon their families. They become paranoid and violent. Methamphetamine addiction has a 90 % morality rate. 90 % of addicts are either dead, brain damaged or in prison within 5 years.
I started Mothers Against meth-Amphetamine ( MAMa) in Sedalia. having an addicted child and watching the total devastation of his life was overwhelming. I knew in my hear that something needed to be done to educate the youth in our communities about the dangers of this drug.
In December of 2007, we were given permission by the administration of Smith Cotton High School to take our "High is a Lie" presentation into the school and present it to all 1300 students. The "High is a Lie" program consists of visual, educational, and teacher aid resources for teaching factual material concerning the effect of methamphetamine on the human body, with emphasis on the brain and psychological effects.
From January to March, we spent one hour a day, three days a week, meeting with individual classes at Smith Cotton. In every class we had at least 2 students who were affected by meth either through a parent, friend or family member. the administration informed us that students were beginning to go and talk to school counselors after our visit about the problems they were facing due to addicted parents.
In January of 2008,we presented the "High is a Lie" program to the administration and 65 teachers at the Sedalia Middle School. On May 23rd, we presented the program to 325 6th grade students and were astounded at the feedback we received from the students and the questions they were asking at the young age.
In the last 18 months, I have done over 50 presentations in our community to civic organizations, counseling services, Inter-Agency meetings, churches and Social Service agencies. Meth is not a family problem, it is a community problem. Every other Tuesday at 6:30 PM, a MAMa support group meets at Broadway Baptist Church . Family members come from as far away as Lee's Summit for the education and support of our group. The Sedalia MAMa chapter is the only one in the state of Missouri.
MAMa is a 501-C-3 organization who does not receive any government funding. The materials that we use in our educational presentations are not free and we depend on donations from the community as well as fund raisers buy our support group to purchase the needed videos, pamphlets and student workbooks to fulfill our mission of educating the public and our most fragile potential users, our youth.
If you would be interested in helping support in providing this educational series to our youth, please contact me. Your contribution is tax deductible. All funds will be used to take our program into the neighborhoods through block parties ad seminars, and into schools, armed with the resources we need to make a difference in impressionable young minds. it will also allow us to continue to sponsor a support group for addicts and their families in Sedalia.
Your gift will be an investment in our youth and in our community. Please contact me, by either email or phone, if you need further information or have any questions.
With thanks and appreciation for your generous consideration.
